Hoop houses extend the growing season, protect plants from weather extremes and help prevent disease and pest infestation. They make use of the sunlight to create a warm environment in the colder months, making it possible to grow plants before the season truly starts. Plants are viable even after frost because of the protection provided. The EMG Hoop House, a 36’ x 20’ tubular steel frame covered in heavy plastic, is a passive solar greenhouse, sometimes called a high tunnel.
2023 Season
We follow the interests of our committee members. This season we are donating produce to local food pantries and have grown specifically for the native plant sale. The hoop house will continue through the season, growing tomatoes in containers. We also are conducting a solarization and occultation experiment in preparation for an alternative pollinator lawn.
Happenings – May 8, 2023
Monday May 22, 1-2 pm, we will be doing a demo open to the public on solarization – killing grass with clear plastic and occultation – killing grass with black plastic.
Things are looking great at the hoop house. Newly planted tomatoes are tucked into open spaces, peas are producing and it’s time to harvest more for Just Food.
May 8 was a very exciting day for the hoop house committee! A lot of effort was put into installing drop down sides and the project was finally completed. Not only that, but the shade cloth was installed as well.
